KEY FINDINGS:

2007 HOUSEHOLD STATISTICS AMONG THOSE CANI SERVED

  • CANI documented serving 10,245 households and 26,729 individuals in 2007.

  • 4,223 single parent female households accounted for 41.2% of all households served.

  • CANI clients included 4,497 children ages 0 to 5 years, 4,731 children ages 6 to 11 years, and

    3,788 ages 12 to 17 years. Together these 13,016 children were over 49% of all the people

    CANI served.

  • In 2007, CANI documented serving 1,191 senior citizens age 70 or over, which is 54.5% of those

    served.

  • 72.7% of households served in 2007 had incomes below 100% of the Federal poverty level.

  • Despite their low income levels, nearly half (48.1%) of all household heads were working.

  • 826 households, or 8.1% of those served, were on public cash assistance when CANI helped

    them.

  • Households served were generally small; households with one, two, or three people accounted

    for 72.0% of households served. The average size of CANI households was 2.6 in 2007.

  • 70.0% of the 2007 households served lived in rental housing.

  • There were only 1,409 intact two-parent families, 13.8% of 2007 households served. Of families

    with children, only 24.1% were two-parent families.

  • Among the 26,729 people served, 14,562 or 54.9% were Caucasian; there were 10,202 African

    American people served or 38.2% of those served. 1,434 people were served of Hispanic/Latino

    origin, which was 5.6% of the total.

  • 34.0% of people served in 2007 reported they had no private health insurance.

  • 39.5% of persons over age 24 who were served in 2007 had less than a high school diploma or

    GED. Only 7.7% of household heads had two or more years of post high school education.
