CANI Mission

CANI helps communities, families, and individuals remove the causes and conditions of poverty.

CANI by the numbers

CANI helped 31,322 people in northeast Indiana in 2006. CANI serves over half of the more than 42,000 people living in poverty in the area.

Last year, CANI made the following possible:

  • 12,153 families received help with their utility bills, either reconnecting services or preventing disconnect.
  • 4,239 children were provided quality child care in order for families to acquire or maintain employment or go to school.
  • 1,497 senior citizens and 4,206 people with disabilities maintained independent living situations.
  • 831 children developed school-readiness skills in preparation for kindergarten.
  • 799 children obtained age-appropriate immunizations, medical, and dental care.
  • 384 families improved parenting and family-functioning skills, thereby reducing the risk of child abuse and neglect.
  • 214 families became more self-sufficient through intensive, home-based case-management services.
  • 200 families received monthly housing assistance in order to maintain safe and decent housing.
  • 170 families lived in safer and more energy-efficient homes.
  • 17 families had extensive home improvements which improved the buildings’ durability and made their homes more livable and safe.

CANI has accomplished much in the past and wants to accomplish even more in the future. To do that, however, CANI needs the help and financial support of our community. Please consider supporting CANI today. Thank you!

CANI will have a golf outing at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at Cherry Hill Golf Course, 6615 Wheelock Road, Fort Wayne. Cost will be $80 for a single golfer ($95 after April 21) or $320 for a foursome ($380 after April 21). To sign up with your credit card, click here.  Fee includes 18 holes of Florida Scramble-style golf and an awards banquet immediately following. Top golfers will win cash prizes. There will be contests including Closest to the Pin, Longest Drive, Longest Putt, and more.

Sponsorships from $300 to $2,500 also are available. Proceeds benefit low-income families in northeast Indiana through CANI’s programs and services, including Head Start, child care and energy assistance, weatherization, and case management programs. In addition, CANI advocates for low-income people and provides research on poverty for other organizations. For more information, call Jennifer Renner at 423-3546, ext. 286, or visit www.canigolf.org.

Would you like to give and get back?

If you’re looking for an opportunity to reduce your income tax bite, you might consider the Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) tax credit. NAP is a state-authorized tax credit designed to let tax-payers direct a portion of their income tax dollars to specific local programs that serve low-income Hoosiers.

For every NAP dollar you give to CANI ($100 minimum), you receive 50 percent of the contribution back as a direct tax credit on your state income taxes. Unlike a deduction, NAP credits are applied to the Indiana state tax liability – the bottom line taxes a person owes after all deductions are taken. Additionally, because CANI is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, a NAP contribution also can be taken as a federal tax deduction. (As always, you should consult your tax advisor about your individual situation before making a contribution.)

More than 29,000 economically disadvantaged Hoosiers annually find a helping hand through CANI programs and services. But while CANI staff members take pride in working efficiently and quickly, we never lose sight of the fact that we are helping individual people and changing individual lives. Here are the stories of just a few of the people who have asked us for help in the past year.
